creating mini scenarios and branching scenarios

Mini-Scenarios

Mini-scenarios, or one-question scenario assessments, are slightly more active than just listening to an example. Set up a short scenario and ask learners a multiple choice question. I frequently use this technique with clients who are just dipping their toes in scenario-based learning but aren’t ready to jump into full-blown branching or simulations. You can use this technique for practice or assessment, even in a linear elearning course. In ILT, use a scenario to pose a question to the class. Ask which choice they would make with a show of hands.

Branching Scenarios

Branching scenarios are one of the most active methods of using scenarios for learning, short of simulations and serious games. Branching lets learners make choices and see the consequences of their actions. It gives them a safe space to fail and learn from mistakes.

Accessible Training Design

In Marie Dubost's facilitation session, she asked participants to come up with suitable metaphors on ' Accessible Facilitation Session Design ' . Here's what her participants came up with .

(1)  Accessible Session Design is like a flipped solar system.

Instead of designing the standards for access to the most ABLE among us, create sessions that can be accessible to the widest group of people possible.

(2) Accessible facilitation design is like Vine. In the forest , the bigger and stronger trees enable the growth of the vine, smaller plants and saplings by giving them something to climb on to. To finally reach the sunlgiht.

(3) Accessible Facilition Design is like a dinner table !

Build it as wide and as long as possible so as to accommodate a variety of abilities and perspectives.

(4)  Accessbile session design is like - a Menu in the restaurant . By offering a Menu or a buffet with many choices, we cater to the largest group possible, and to their preferences.

Accessible Training / Facilitation session design tips for participants with limited mobility.

Mobility challenge is not about being in wheel chairs. Some people have difficulty in moving all limbs or limited mobility in other limbs.

Hence,  plan a variety of activities that accomodate a limited movement.

Accessible Facilitation Program Design tool : CAPTIONS .

Captions in English are very popular even among participants with no hearing impairments or challenges !

A Study found that, 66% of students with English as a second language found captions very helpful.

For the Voice Over that is in English.

StageText, a UK charity that provides captioning for broadcast and for live events found that, 80% of students aged 18-24 enable captions while watching TV !

64% of users  between 25 and 35 do the same !

The Dreyfus model of learning & skill development ( Bing Chat )

Q to Bing ; What is Dreyfus model of skill acquisiton ?

The Dreyfus model of skill acquisition is a model that describes how learners acquire skills through formal instruction and practicing. It was proposed by brothers Stuart  Dreyfus and Hubert Dreyfus in 1980. The model is used in the fields of education and operations research .

The model proposes that a student passes through five distinct stages .

1. **Novice**:

At this stage, learners have little or no experience or background knowledge. They must adhere to a clear set of rules or guidelines and often need supervision to complete tasks².

2. **Advanced Beginner**:

Once the novice has learned the basic rules of a skill, they progress to advanced beginner. Here, they begin applying rules to new situations and receive important feedback when they make a mistake².

3. **Competence**:

During the competency stage, the learner encounters situations where the rules don’t apply or where it is unclear which rules should be used. This can lead to the individual becoming paralyzed by indecision².

4. **Proficient**:

Generally speaking, the proficient individual can select an appropriate course of action for any situation with confidence².

5. **Expert**:

In the expert stage, action is driven by intuition derived from a deep understanding of the subject matter².

The Dreyfus model is based on four binary qualities:

- Recollection (non-situational or situational)

- Recognition (decomposed or holistic)

- Decision (analytical or intuitive)

- Awareness (monitoring or absorbed)¹

The original model included mastery as the last stage. In the book Mind over Machine, this was slightly adjusted to end with Expertise¹. The Dreyfus model is widely used to provide a means of assessing and supporting progress in the development of new skills and competencies².
